Chupei Yu: Screens, the Body and Algorithmic Perception

21 May 2025

Digital technology has long ceased to be merely a tool or subject matter for artistic creation. It has now deeply permeated the very conditions under which perception is formed. Within this context, Chupei Yus curatorial practice demonstrates a keen analytical insight into digital culture. She maintains a sustained focus on artificial intelligence, sensory experience, the construction of identity, and the relationship between technology and the body, yet she neither romanticises the digital as a spectacle nor reduces it to a mere threat. Her curatorial approach is closer to a form of meticulous perceptual critique: through cross-media juxtapositions and spatial organisation, she enables the audience to recognise, through concrete viewing experiences, how algorithmic logic quietly permeates our perceptual habits.

Her curatorial work is rooted in cross-media art, digital culture and spatial narrative, endowing her with a unique spatial awareness when navigating the relationships between screens, projections, sound and physical space. The screen is not merely a carrier of images. It is simultaneously an interface between the body and the image, and a generator of distance and delay. When digital imagery, painting, photography and installation encounter one another within the same space, the friction between these media exposes their respective boundaries, as well as the extent to which technological mediation has become internalised as the default framework through which we perceive the world. As the audience moves in and out of the screen, the body is both extended and repositioned by technology. This tension constitutes an ongoing aesthetic proposition within her curatorial practice.

Within this proposition, the body occupies a structural position. Yu Chupei does not view the body as the last bastion under technological erosion, but rather understands it as a node that is constantly being reconfigured within a techno-cultural network. The body in digital imagery is often replicated, delayed, layered and deconstructed; whilst the viewer in physical space is compelled to complete the act of viewing through the movement of their own body. The tension between corporeality on and off the screen transforms the exhibition into a live experiment on the conditions of perception. Here, identity is no longer a fixed label, but is constantly rewritten through replication, dislocation, and the interplay of sound and image. Her curatorial work does not seek to criticise technology in a thematic manner, but rather, through the relationship between space and medium, shifts the critique from the discursive to the experiential level.

The value of this curatorial strategy lies in its maintenance of a critical restraint. Faced with an era in which algorithms increasingly dominate visual experience, Yu Chupei offers neither a facile stance of resistance nor succumbs to technological optimism. What she does is to reserve, within the exhibition space, an enclave for bodily perception that cannot be fully reduced to data. Viewers need not be told how algorithms have shaped their way of seeing; rather, through the exhibitions rhythm, distances and dislocations, they personally experience the traces and fissures of this shaping. Her curatorial practice thus reveals a rare acuity: it neither shuns digital culture nor submits to technological logic, but instead reopens possibilities for seeing amidst the interplay between screen and body.
