Xin Wei: Cross-Boundary Design Leader With 12-Year Industry Impact

A chronological profile bridging commercial practice, design education, entrepreneurship and AI-augmented design

Over more than twelve years, from 2014 to 2026, Xin Wei has built a sustained record of original work across interaction design, digital product innovation, design education, industry organization, and technology-driven cultural projects. His path combines roles that are rarely held together: early core designer on DingTalk at Alibaba Group, full-time university instructor, technology entrepreneur, provincial design association leader, and active design educator with a large professional following.

Xin Wei’s career began in 2014 at Alibaba Group. He joined the early DingTalk incubation team when the product was still being built from zero to one, working out of the residential house where Jack Ma had originally founded the company. He contributed to DingTalk’s logo, UI and interaction design. Within Alibaba’s e-commerce lines he also served as design lead for a Tmall Double 11 sub-venue. Between 2014 and 2015 he independently delivered the full brand and interface design for the internal innovation project “Zhuo Ji,” completed copyright registration for the work, and saw the project covered by 36Kr, one of China’s leading technology media platforms.

The Alibaba years shaped a clear commercial design methodology that continues to guide his work. Reflecting on that period, he said:

“Alibaba is rooted in e-commerce. Working on both Zhuo Ji and the Tmall projects taught me that the essence of design is solving problems, not delivering superficial aesthetic pleasure. Every interface decision had to be tested against real user behavior and business outcomes. We learned to move quickly from concept to measurable result—looking at conversion, retention, and operational efficiency rather than relying on subjective taste. Designers had to collaborate tightly with product managers and engineers, translate business goals into clear interaction logic, and accept that beauty without performance was incomplete. That data-informed, outcome-oriented approach became the foundation of how I evaluate design.”

After Alibaba, Xin Wei joined Wacai Network Technology, where he led experience design for the fintech product “Xiao Shan.” He introduced a cartoon-style brand IP that ran through the interface and marketing of the Lightning Provident Fund APP. The approach lowered users’ psychological barrier to professional financial tools and improved overall usability. Internal operational data later showed a more than 50 percent increase in downloads and over 30 percent improvement in user stickiness.

In 2020 he took a full-time instructor position at China Jiliang University’s Modern Science and Technology College, teaching undergraduate product design for more than five years. The classroom experience sharpened his view of design education:

“Many students have a strong sense of social responsibility, but socially oriented design cannot rely only on imagination. Field research, user studies and real market constraints often account for 30 percent or more of a proper design cycle. Students must also learn to balance aesthetic expression with manufacturing cost, materials, logistics and actual use.”

In 2021 he founded Hangzhou Xinshuo Technology and established the DUDC Design Center, serving as General Manager. The company launched the DUDC Design Learning Platform and Design Asset Platform, both of which received software copyright registrations. At the same time he built the content brand “Mr. Wei Talks about Design” across Xiaohongshu, Douyin, Bilibili and other platforms, growing a community of nearly 100,000 followers composed mainly of practicing designers and design students. The content ecosystem steadily generated business leads for the company.

His product philosophy from entrepreneurship is direct:

“Thinking only generates questions; execution delivers answers. Market-ready products emerge through continuous small-scale trial and iteration, not closed-door reasoning alone.”

In 2024, at the invitation of the Zhejiang Creative Design Association, Xin Wei initiated the Interaction Design Professional Committee and became its Executive Vice Chairman. He founded and organized the UXGO Interaction Experience Design Conference, held at the Zhejiang Provincial Association for Science and Technology Building. The event brought together experts from internet, AI, new-energy and smart-home sectors, creating a practical exchange platform that links universities, enterprises and young designers.

Speaking about the conference, he explained:

“UXGO aims to help practitioners from different sectors understand each other’s pain points and exchange practical methods. Although industries vary, the underlying problem-solving logic is often universal and can be adapted across projects. Drawing from my years as a design instructor, I also wanted to bridge the gap between university education and real industrial demands, so teachers and students can clearly see what commercial design actually requires.”

Since 2020 he has served as a jury member for multiple domestic and international design competitions. In late 2024 he was appointed a Council Member of UXPA China (East China Region). He has delivered invited lectures at institutions including Jiangnan University and the China Academy of Art. In 2026, he received two iF Design Awards—one in Packaging Design and one in Product Design (smart home). His AI-powered intelligent washing machine and related works also earned recognition from the MUSE Design Awards, London Design Awards and Rome Design Awards.

Looking at the AI era, Xin Wei remains pragmatic:

“AI breaks down traditional boundaries between product managers, designers and developers. Designers must become versatile problem-solvers rather than purely visual creators. Our core competitiveness now includes product thinking, user insight and market awareness. When developing smart-home hardware, thorough research into real living environments and hidden pain points is essential.”

Across twelve years, each stage has reinforced the next: the data-informed commercial rigor formed at Alibaba, human-centered tool design from fintech, social responsibility from teaching, iteration discipline from entrepreneurship, platform-building from industry leadership, and a forward-looking framework from award-winning smart hardware and packaging work.

“Design generates multi-layered influence,” he concluded. “It appears in product interfaces, in talent development, through cross-industry dialogue, and in cultural renewal. AI is a powerful new tool, yet human designers still hold the core power of value judgment and creative decision-making.”

Xin Wei continues to work at the intersection of commercial practice, education, industry organization and AI-augmented design, shaping both products and the broader design community in China.
