NEW ROCHELLE, NY.- 3rd Rail Studio is excited to announce its upcoming exhibition Wall Scrawl, a 360 degree exploration of street art as seen by street muralists, a street art photographer and a painter. Through various standpoints and bold, raw images, 3rd Rail Studio intends to capture the unexpected beauty and ephemeral nature of an often-underappreciated art form.
Street Art is defined as any art developed in a public space. It takes its shape in many forms, from traditional graffiti to video projections to street installation. While some artists do it illegally and others get permission, their purpose is to utilize public space to reach a much broader audience than conventional artwork and galleries normally allow.
However, while street art may reach a wide range of people, many disregard it and dont recognize it technically as an art form. Through Charlene Weisler's gritty photographs of street art, Rudy Gyselings abstract paintings, and several contemporary graffiti artists, Wall Scrawl gives recognition to street art by taking the work from the streets to the walls of a gallery. In doing so, 3rd Rail Studio will bring important awareness to this stimulating and often ground-breaking art form as it richly deserves.
3rd Rail Studio is an independently owned art gallery that is dedicated to showcasing and promoting the work of talented artists. The goal at 3rd Rail is to develop a respected, professional environment where un-established artists are given a chance to exhibit their work. The gallery at 3rd Rail Studio is run by the artists, notes Executive Director Christine Milo. Milo added, I provide artists with a forum to be seen and heard, and the freedom to express themselves as they like. While I oversee the completion of each exhibit, I like to give the artists the freedom to show what they want, how they want, and with whom they want. Through its innovative approach, 3rd Rail Studio has set itself apart from other galleries and has become one of the leading alternative art spaces in Westchester, NY.
Its a thrill to show work at 3rd Rail, a space that really understands and appreciates all art forms -- sanctioned or not, comments participating photographer Weisler. I have dedicated my work in the last couple of years to capturing the color, creativity and exuberance of street collage and painting. Weisler adds, Because Street Art typically has a limited lifespan, my photographs allow audiences who may never have had an opportunity to experience these inspired pieces a chance to interact with them on a personal level.
3rd Rail Studio strives to bring attention to a more diverse range of work. While many art galleries are content to show artists that are fairly traditional and popular with the public, 3rd Rail acknowledges the unknown artists and exhibits work that is original and unexpected. Whether it is an expressive stroke on a canvas, a purposeful gesture with a spray can, or a photographic composition of a street corner, the work in Wall Scrawl is an innovative take on the impermanent landscape of the streets, finding beauty in its urban decay.
Wall Scrawl opens June 30 with a free reception from 6:00-9:00PM which is open to the public. The exhibit runs from June 30 - July 29. Located in New Rochelle, NY, at 49 Plain Avenue, 3rd Rail Studio is easily accessible by Metro North train or car.
