AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND.- One of the world’s most celebrated New York artists, Tony Oursler, is set to present a major outdoor video projection in the Viaduct in May, with an example of the most unique outdoor art to grace the city as part of the Auckland Art Fair.

Oursler’s unique projection works have been featured on buildings and outdoor spaces in some of the world’s biggest cities including New York, London and Athens. And now, for the fi rst time, one of Oursler’s works, Head Knocking, is to be shown in Auckland.

True to its name, Head Knocking features a man doing just that. Repetitive but not metronomic, the 20 metre head image will be projected onto the architecture of the Fair’s venue at the Viaduct’s Marine Events Centre.

Head Knocking most recently formed part of Infl uence, an exhibition shown in Soho Square, London and Maddison Square Park, New York. The unique image, which also has an audio component, was unveiled at the Auckland Art Fair Vernissage on 17 May 2007. The work is visible from the Viaduct Harbour area and will be on display for the duration of the Fair.

Andrew Jensen, Oursler’s Australasian dealer gallery says that Oursler is a cultural commentator and uses psychology and humour with the most acute observational eye to create work that engages you visually, conceptually and emotionally. Certainly the inclusion of Head Knocking in the 2007 Fair is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to see and experience this unique artwork. Oursler continues to engage and mesmerize his audience through his thought-provoking and fascinating works, which have found permanent homes in some of the most renown museums including London’s Tate Gallery, Cartier Foundation in Paris and Musée d’Art Contemporain in Barcelona.

The Auckland Art Fair 07 brings 35 leading galleries from New Zealand and Australia together to showcase more than 600 of the most sought-after contemporary artworks from Australasia. The Fair takes place from 18-20 May at the Marine Events Centre, Viaduct Harbour.
