'Taking Care' by Fumico Azuma.

ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS.- Artists Fumico Azuma and Tim Can are a Japanese/British partnership in art currently resident in Peckham. From June 5th till the 17th they present new work at The Foundry, Great Eastern St, London EC2.

Their work is a combination of method and principle based on a firm foundation of reclaimed materials. Fumico Azuma, injecting Buddhism into installations, born again furniture, written on her boots; creating work in, on and about the environment meets Tim Can in Barcelona in 1999, creator of mixed media collage, master of the found object, maker of field recordings They found a shell of a studio, rebuilt the facade and an entire second floor. All of it being a salvage and recycle operation, from the windows and doors down to the bare boards and nails.

Materials have sprung from the pavement, they've sold their work in the streets. They've been offered commissions in an 11th century Spanish castle, a beach installation in Indonesia and more recently a residency at the Design Festa Gallery in Tokyo.

The East and West collaboration here is not entirely visual. We are also able to see and hear Zuzushii Monkey, a project that runs concurrently with their other work. Experimental sound collage, scrap inspired instruments, plus a bit of old and new technology. The essential elements are the same: the found materials; the blend of influences; the Buddhist mantras pasted on Fumico’s boots are the same that she'll sing.
