| Amenity Space: Sonic Shed Project |

The Sonic Shed Project by Amenity Space.
|
WEST BRETTON, UK.- Architecture Week (15 - 25 June) will be celebrated at Yorkshire Sculpture Park with the extension of a current exhibition by Leo Fitzmaurice and the opening of a new, innovative project by Amenity Space which connects environments, spaces and experiences in real-time across the UK.
The Sonic Shed Project by Amenity Space links architecture with radio programming through a series of ‘garden sheds’ installed at key London locations. Each shed records live sound for playback in an alternate shed located elsewhere. Yorkshire Sculpture Park will be linked by a shed installed in its Formal Garden. The sounds of YSP will be recorded and relayed to a new public art space ‘Portobello Space’ on London’s Portobello Road; whilst the urban hum of London will be transposed to the 18th century, landscaped pleasure gardens of the Park.
Each shed interior will also display photographs and images from its exchange location, further enabling listeners to take a ‘virtual’ journey guided by sound. The recordings will be streamed back to London’s art radio station Resonance 104.4fm and broadcast as a sound collage during Architecture Week.
By dislocating sound and displacing the everyday object of a suburban shed to alternative environments, the Sonic Shed Project encourages people to think creatively about spaces around them.
To coincide with Architecture Week, and linking to this year’s focus on sustainability and the environment, YSP has extended the current exhibition by Leo Fitzmaurice Sometimes the things you touch come true until 24 June. Fitzmaurice removes logos and text from everyday packets, bags and boxes. Stripped of all ‘visual noise’, Sainsbury’s value range packaging provides the basis for a series of structures and modernist buildings which form a miniature, gridded cityscape. From the discarded cardboard texts Fitzmaurice has also made a shantytown on the periphery of the city. A background buzz from radios breathes uncertain life into this metropolis.
Yorkshire Sculpture Park will begin its celebration of contemporary architecture with a lecture by Leo Fitzmaurice at 7pm, 15 June examining issues of consumerism, popular culture, architecture, symbolism and notions of ideal environments and liveable conditions. Tickets £10/£8 concessions.
