Mark Titchner, The Future is Behind Us, 2007.

GATESHEAD, UK.- The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art presents Mark Titchner. 2006 Turner Prize nominee, Mark Titchner’s bespoke installation will mark the launch of BALTIC’s new art space - The Street. Titchner’s show is the first in a series of projects by international artists and will transform the entire entrance corridor of BALTIC.

Titchner’s sculptures, installations, light boxes and posters combine catchphrases and clichés from pop, advertising and utopian statements with lines from songs, political manifestos, philosophy and sociological theory.

Informed by the work of seminal artists such as Barbara Kruger and Jenny Holzer, his works have a psychological intensity and exploit the tensions between surface and depth with a distinctive, electrifying graphic style.

Titchner represents a new generation of young emerging artists. Often associated with channelling the energy of youth and with ideas of the avant-garde, his distinctive works appear to literally hum with energy.
