LOS ANGELES, CA.- Michael Kohn Gallery will present a solo exhibition of new work by New York based artist James Nares. The exhibition is comprised of a vibrant combination of large-scale horizontal and square linen canvases and works on paper that range from electric jewel-tones in red, blue, and green to deep shades of yellow, orange, and brown.

In his new body of work, Nares has continued to hone in on mastering the balance between spontaneity and control. Using his signature handcrafted brushes, Nares' also uses a "rig" to assist him with painting above the canvas, allowing him to capture the intuitive energy and lyricism of his artistic process in saturated, monochromatic brushstrokes. Nares' livid and elegant abstractions appear to be simple gestures but are in fact the end result of a series of mediated and repeated calligraphic strokes. Nares' weightless actions transform into a controlled mess consisting of swirls and waves, which seize and elongate the notion of movement and time.

James Nares has been in solo exhibitions at Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York; Hamiltons Gallery, London, England; and Galerie Thomas Von Lintel, Munich. His works have been included in the collections at MoMA, New York; Whitney Museum of Art, New York; and the Albright Knox Museum, Buffalo, NY.
