Quintín Rivera Toro, Eternal Swimmer.

SAN JUAN, PR.- Quintín Rivera Toro, represented by Walter Otero Gallery, has been invited to participate in shows at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum in California, and at the Grossman Gallery of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. These will take place during the months of July and September, respectively.

“Sonotube(r) Forms: Contemporary Art and Transport”, composed by an international ensemble of artists, deals with issues such as the transportability and economy of artwork which often characterizes the globalized art world. Mikki García, Executive Director of CAF, has curated this exhibition and for it Rivera Toro will present a color photograph titled “Ahí Vamos” - 2007 (“Here we go”). This work of unusual format, 8 inches tall by 120 wide, consists of a swimmer (the artist himself) while navigating inside an immense pool. This work is a metaphoric commentary on the distance between first and third world countries.

For the exhibition “America's Paradise" and "Isla Del Incanto", at the Grossman Gallery del School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Rivera Toro will present his video piece “Marcha triunfal hacia el yo” – 2005 (“Triumphant March Towards the Self”), a work which traces contemporary capitalists values back to the artists childhood in Puerto Rico. It is worth mentioning that this piece is the product of an artist grant given by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Puerto Rico and by Lexus, the car company. The curator of this collective show, Joanna Soltan, the S.M.F.A. Curator, has also invited the artist for a lecture on his own work, as well as inviting him to be a part of a jury committee for the selection of outstanding student artwork within the institution.

Regarding this last exhibition, Rivera Toro comments “for this project, curator Joanna Soltan presents the analysis of artists which live and work within countries denominated as “U.S. Territories”. “To participate in thematic shows with such provocative curatorial ideas, represents an important step in my process, even more so when the invitations come from institutions such as the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

“Sonotube(r) Forms: Contemporary Art and Transport” will be on view from July 14 until August 26 at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum. While, "America's Paradise" and "Isla Del Incanto" will be shown at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts de Boston from September 18 until October 13.
