WEST PALM BEACH.-Organized by the Norton Museum of Art, highlighting eleven recent photographic donations and acquisitions, BIG Picture reveals the growing trend in contemporary art for photographs to be big really big.
Charles Stainback, the William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography commented We are very pleased to have the opportunity to now own such revered and accomplished contemporary artists and photographers and we are especially proud to share them with the community.
It was not that long ago that when one thought about a photograph it either fit in your back pocket or on the fireplace mantel. Over the last two decades advancing photographic technologies have allowed artists to make photographic prints that rival the scale and therefore, the impact of paintings. Images that are now measured in feet rather than inches are now the norm.
From Thomas Demands recreation of an unlikely museum accident, or Reiner Leists isolated image from his ongoing series of over 2,400 views from his New York City apartment window, to the beautiful landscapes of Elger Esser and the stunning portrait by Chuck Close, BIG Picture reveals the amazing diversity of approaches and the seemingly endless possibilities of the photographic image in the 21st-century.
The scale of these photographs is far from inconsequential. Yet for each artist the decision to print big is about more than just scale. It is with these large photographs that the current generation of photographers hopes to address in some meaningful fashion our ever-changing times and the truly big picture of the world we live in.
Organized by the Norton Museum of Art. This exhibition is made possible in part through the generosity of the Photography Committee of the Norton Museum of Art.
