Matt Calderwood - Projections in London |

LONDON.- David Risley Gallery presents Matt Calderwood - Projections, on view 7 September - 11 October 2007. Projections is Matt Calderwood's second solo show at David Risley Gallery. Over the past 10 years Calderwood has become increasingly well known for his video works. His most recent solo exhibitions have been exclusively in that medium, so it will come as something of a surprise to those familiar with his work that the titular projections of this new show are in fact physical projections and not video at all.
Calderwood has produced a group of new sculptures in which balance is of primary concern. Five large cantilever structures dominate the gallery, constructed from timber and clad in plasterboard, these structures, despite their relatively lightweight construction, convey a sense of monumental, architectural solidity and permanence, their mute grey surfaces suggesting the angular strength and mass of structural cast concrete. They reach out into the gallery like half constructed bridges or some utilitarian supporting element ripped from a motorway flyover.
Without their other halves or solid foundations these structures are inherently unstable and as such they rely heavily upon the counterbalances which they carry. The counterweights are large translucent plastic containers filled with water, seen against the light grey surface of the plasterboard these ballasts become quite inconspicuous, making the sculptures seem more precarious than they actually are.
Despite their apparent strength and mass it remains obvious that these sculptures are actually made of plasterboard. The stuff of false walls and toilet cubicles, this brittle and cheap material is never normally left in its unfinished state, here it recalls the raw concrete of Brutalist architecture and the geometry of minimalist sculpture with it's unashamedly undressed surface and powerful physical presence.
Whilst signalling a move toward a more architectural sensibility, this new body of sculpture also furthers Calderwood's working interest in balance, adding to the enquiries made in his on-going video practice and his earlier sculptural work. Projections refers not only to the physical conditions of the work, it also plays with the expectations of the viewer and perhaps forecasts a new direction in Calderwood's practice.
Matt Calderwood has been commissioned to produce a temporary video installation in October 2007 as part of the public art program for Canons Marsh, Bristol Harbourside. In 2008, Matt will exhibit in the group exhibition, 'Transformed', at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, USA. He is also having a solo exhibition with Galerie Martin Van Zomeren, Amsterdam, in April 2008.
