COLLEGEVILLE, PA.- In keeping with the emphasis at The Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College on the vital relationship between the arts and education, a roundtable discussion, titled, “In the Eye of the Beholder: The Barnes Foundation and the Art of Education” will be held Nov. 29 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the Main Gallery of the Berman Museum of Art.
The event is free and open to the public. However, due to space limitations at the Museum where it will take place, only 100 attendees can be accommodated, and pre-registration will be required by Nov. 15. To pre-register for this event or to find out more about it, please contact Suzanne Calvin at scalvin@ursinus.edu or (610) 409-3500. The Berman Museum hosts this special event dedicated to one of the least-discussed aspects of the Barnes Foundation: its impact as an innovator of arts education.
This discussion, with a panel of distinguished, internationally-known speakers, will focus on the development of the innovative educational program at the Barnes Foundation: how that program has evolved in tandem with the Foundation, and how the Barnes Foundation program has informed and influenced the educational programs of other arts institutions throughout the field.
Panelists will include: Derek Gillman, Executive Director and President, Barnes Foundation; George Hein, Professor Emeritus, Lesley University, authority on museum education, and former member of Curatorial Advisory Group for the Collections Assessment Project at the Barnes Foundation; Rika Burnham, Associate Educator, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Richard Wattenmaker, past student at the Barnes Foundation, distinguished American art historian, former Director of the National Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian, member of Curatorial Advisory Group for Collections Assessment Project at Barnes Foundation, and author of books on Barnes Foundation collections; Abigail Housen, co-founding director of Visual Understanding in Education (VUE), one of the foremost international non-profit organizations devoted to the integration of the visual arts in K-12 education.
The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus, known for its diverse collection and innovative educational programming, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; noon to 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, and closed Mondays and college holidays. The museum is accessible to the physically disabled and admission is free. The museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Exhibitions and programs are funded in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. For group tour information, call 610-409-3500.
