Concrete Canvas Premieres October 22

NEW YORK.- Voom’s Gallery HD, the only high-definition channel devoted to the visual arts, is taking it to the streets for an in-depth look at the visually stunning and often controversial world of street art in the new half-hour weekly series, Concrete Canvas, premiering Monday, October 22 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C.

This novel series follows internationally renowned pavement artist Julian Beever to ten cities in the U.S., Europe and Latin America. During his three-day stay in each city, Beever creates astounding 3D chalk drawings that transform simple sidewalks into everything from a towering reproduction of Big Ben in London to a devastating scene from the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. The series also explores the works of each city’s most famous -- and in some cases, infamous -- street artists, including London’s D*Face, Amsterdam’s Laser 3.14, New York’s Swoon, and Paris’ Blek le Rat, the “Godfather of Stencil Art.”

Following are descriptions of the 10 episodes that will air on Gallery HD beginning October 22. One of the 15 VOOM HD Networks, Gallery HD is available nationally on the DISH Network satellite service (Channel 9472) and Cablevision’s iO digital cable service (Channel 714).

Episode 1: Philadelphia
TV-G
Premieres October 22 at 8 pm ET and PC/7C
The debut installment of CONCRETE CANVAS finds Beever in the “City of Brotherly Love,” battling the clock and rainstorms (his greatest enemy), to create a soaring eagle and flag work to commemorate July 4th. This episode also features interviews with the coordinator and artists involved in the Philadelphia Mural Art Program, which led to the creation of 2,700 murals, more than any other city in the world.

Episode 2: London
TV-G
Premieres October 29 at 8 pm ET and PC/7C
While in London, Beever pays tribute to contemporary art by creating a 3D interpretation of Big Ben (with silent film star Harold Lloyd hanging from its clock face) steps from the Tate Modern. This episode also profiles London’s renowned outlaw stencil artists, including Banksy, and his guerilla art cohorts, D*Face and Arofish, at their secret studios.

Episode 3: Stockholm
TV-G
Premieres November 5 at 8 pm ET and PC/7C
Beever decides to capture the beauty of this picturesque 14-island city in a water work that salutes the Swedes’ favorite national pastime, fishing. In a town with stern anti-graffiti laws, Concrete Canvas examines a new breed of artists who are “tagging” the streets with knitted woolen artworks.

Episode 4: New York
TV-G
Premieres November 12 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
Beever attempts to depict the Big Apple’s energy in Tompkins Square Park with a creative 3D work featuring local luminaries descending into a subway station. This episode also catches up with pioneering street artist Micheal De Feo, AKA “The Flower Guy,” and Swoon, a 27-year-old street artist whose life-size wheat paste prints and paper cutout figures have been giving jaded New Yorkers reason to pause since 1999.

Episode 5: Berlin
TV-G
Premieres November 19 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
Beever gets into the spirit of Berlin by creating a remarkable piece of street art -- a massive beer stein. This episode also features an interview with Thierry Noir, one of the original artists from the East Side Gallery, which houses the works of 106 artists on a remaining 1.3 km-long section of the Berlin Wall.

Episode 6: Amsterdam
TV-G
Premieres November 26 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
Beever’s 3D work in Holland’s most picturesque port-of-call brings to life the city’s most famous icons – tulips, canals, bridges and of course, its Dutch master painters. This episode also presents noted street artist Laser 3.14 and his “Aerosol Symphonies” exhibition, where the works of 14 street artists are married with music, as well as Faith 71, whose spray can pieces graduated from the streets to the galleries.

Episode 7: San Francisco
TV-G
Premieres December 3 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
In this compelling episode, Beever works to recreate one of the most dramatic events in this city’s history, the 1906 earthquake, in a sprawling 3D sidewalk canvas. The local street art scene is explored in interviews with “cartoon literalist” Sirron Norris and sticker artist Dave Warnke.

Episode 8: Paris
TV-G
Premieres December 10 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
In the City of Light where pavement drawing is forbidden, Beever must find a suitable site to realize his concept – a 3D sidewalk reproduction of the Eiffel Tower. The legendary Blek le Rat, known in the 80s as “The Godfather of Stencil Art,” is also showcased in a rare interview, both in the studio and on the streets.

Episode 9: Mexico City
TV-G
Premieres December 17 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
In the home of esteemed muralist Diego Rivera, Beever works to create a piece that captures the natural and surrealist beauty that is Mexico. This episode also takes viewers to “Just Writing My Name,” a major street art event for graffiti writers without rules or restrictions. Viewers will also meet Joshua “The Black Window” Becuho and Seher, who create optical illusions by painting holes that invite the observer into a “vestibule for an imaginary place.”

Episode 10: Los Angeles
TV-G
Premieres December 24 at 8 pm ET and PT/7C
Julian beguiles scores of curious tourists, hopeful starlets and wannabe rock gods with a 3D piece that captures the glitz and glamour of the LA lifestyle, right on the Redondo Beach Pier. Also featured in this episode is Shepard Fairy, the creator of the famous underground icon, the “Obey Giant,” which can be found on street corners, stop signs and now t-shirts around the globe.
