Launch of New Scholarly Series, Van Gogh Studies

NEW YORK.- On 7 November the launch of the new scholarly series Van Gogh Studies took place in The Morgan Library & Museum in New York. This English-language series affords a platform for research into late 19th-century and early 20th-century western European art. An international editorial board of professionals from academia and the museum world will supervise the series, in which anthologies of research essays alternate with monographs. The contributions are written by renowned researchers and offer a rich and varied picture of the field. The series is an initiative of the Van Gogh Museum and Waanders Publishers.

Part 1: Current Issues in 19th-Century Art - The first issue of Van Gogh Studies reveals the breadth of contemporary research in late 19th-century art. Robert L. Herbert presents a study into the research on Henry Nocq, a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec, about the relationship between fine and the applied arts in the 1890s. Joan E. Greer sheds detailed light on the publication of Van Gogh’s letters in the Belgian modernist periodical Van Nu & Straks in 1893. Robert Jensen and David Galenson’s contribution focuses on the 19th-century French art market. Louis van Tilborgh researches and dates Van Gogh’s stay in the studio of Fernand Cormon and Elise Eeckermann, June Hargrove and Catherine Boyle-Turner provide remarkable studies into aspects of Gauguin’s work and life.

Research - The Van Gogh Museum supports art historical research into the period 1830-1914, with a focus on the life and work of Vincent van Gogh. The publication of Van Gogh Studies is in line with the museum’s research policy, which also includes substantial projects such as the Van Gogh Letters project and the publication of a series of catalogues covering the museum’s collection. Van Gogh Studies replaces the Van Gogh Museum Journal and the Cahier Vincent series. Van Gogh Studies is published annually. Editions in preparation include: Van Gogh: A Literary Mind (2008), The Visions of Gauguin (2009), Thannhauser and Van Gogh (2010).
