DIA Names American Art Wing for Richard A. Manoogian

DETROIT, MI.-The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) will officially dedicate the wing housing the American Art collection to Richard A. Manoogian by designating that space as “The Manoogian Wing” at a gathering at the museum on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Manoogian, executive chairman of Masco Corp., one of the world’s leading manufacturers of home improvement products, is also a respected art collector, longtime DIA supporter, former chairman of the DIA board of directors and current chair emeritus.

“There is no more appropriate designation for the American Wing than the Manoogian Wing,” said Graham W. J. Beal, DIA director. “Richard has always kept American Art and the DIA at the forefront of his interests. He served 12 years as chairman of our board, generously contributed to the lead gifts in two capital campaigns, and over the years has loaned many important works of art to the museum and to DIA-sponsored traveling exhibitions. We cannot thank Richard enough for his tremendous contributions.”

Manoogian joined the DIA board in 1968 in what he called a “civic duty,” but he was soon moved by the enthusiasm of other collectors and began purchasing art. Today, Manoogian and his wife, Jane, have amassed a remarkable collection of American art that focuses on the 19th century, but also includes superb examples of late 18th and early 20th-century American art.

Works from the Manoogian collection are on loan to major museums throughout the world and hundreds of other similar loans have transformed the headquarters of Masco Corporation into an amazing collection of collections, ranging from silver to trains to American, Native American and African American art.
