NAPLES, FL.-The Naples Art Association and the Third Street South Merchants Association are pleased to announce that master maritime painter John Stobart will be among the 35 local and national artists participating in the Third on Canvas live painting event February 19 to 27. The event features painters creating original works outdoors along Third Street South on Feb. 19 and 20, display of the completed works on view Feb. 21 to 24 in Third Street South businesses, a free exhibition of the works on Feb. 26 and 27 at The von Liebig Art Center, and a Gala Benefit Auction on February 27 to sell the works. Proceeds will be shared between the artists and the art association. For Gala information, call 239-262-6517 x108.
"John Stobart's participation is a coup for us," said Taylor C. Wells, executive director of the Naples Art Association. "Mr. Stobart is 78 years old and paints only a few new works each year. Whoever outbids the competition for Mr. Stobart's work created during Third on Canvas will own a real treasure."
Stobart is an internationally celebrated artist who brings brilliance to his work through his interpretation of color, reflection and light. An intense fascination with subject matter, a unique observation of nature, and discipline derived from classic training have made Stobart the most important and acclaimed maritime artist. Locally, Stobart is represented by The Englishman Fine Art & Antiques run by Gallery Director Frank Russen.
Landscape artists who specialize in "plein air" painting were invited to be part of the event. Locally known fine artists such as Paul Arsenault, Barrett Edwards, Suzanne Luker and Jo Anne Sanborn are among those participating. Although they have not been given strict guidance as to what to paint, they will likely cater to the tastes of local art patrons, who appreciate tropical scenes reflective of Naples' pristine beaches and proximity to the Everglades as well as contemporary abstract designs.
"We invite residents and visitors to stroll among the upscale restaurants, shops and art galleries nestled along Third Street South as they watch these artisans create their latest masterpiece," said Tony Ridgway, president of the Third Street South Merchants Association. "Witnessing the work as it evolves and getting to know the artist may inspire people to attend the Gala and own the work whose history they will know so well. It certainly makes for a conversation piece when guests admire the artwork in your home."
Ticket prices for the Feb. 27 Gala are $95 per person and include wine, champagne and supper buffet. To purchase tickets, call 239-262-6517 x108.
Third on Canvas is sponsored by Fifth Third Private Bank, Gulfshore Life, Clear Channel and Tommy Bahama.
