Neuberger Museum of Art To Open A Satellite Exhibition Space

PURCHASE, NEW YORK.- Thom Collins, Director of the Neuberger Museum of Art | Purchase College, announced today that the Museum had entered into a special collaboration with the SUNY College of Optometry in Manhattan that will afford the Museum exhibition space on the ground floor of the College’s historic building, located at 33 West 42nd Street. The Neuberger Museum of Art is the tenth largest university museum in the United States and home to internationally renowned collections containing over 6,000 works of twentieth century American and European art, African art and ancient art. The Museum is named after financier and founding patron Roy R. Neuberger, now 104 years old, whose extensive art collection forms the core of the Museum’s permanent collection, containing primary examples of the movements and individuals who shaped modern art.

“This agreement demonstrates the positive potential of collaboration between SUNY campuses,” said Dr. David A. Heath, O.D., Ed.M., President SUNY State College of Optometry. “The establishment of exhibition space will create a distinctive environment for SUNY College of Optometry programs, while providing the Neuberger Museum and Purchase College with needed visibility in New York City. The agreement also provides an opportunity for co-branding and increased public exposure for the College of Optometry including our eye care facility, the University Optometric Center, and Purchase College."

Mr. Collins said the Museum’s new satellite exhibition space will be renovated in coming months as part of an overall renovation project at the College. “Centrally located across from the New York Public Library, our new location will make the Neuberger’s outstanding collection, special touring exhibitions, and new artist projects even more accessible to thousands of New Yorkers. This collaboration unfolds against a backdrop of dynamic institutional growth and change.”

With its rich resources and prominent place in the life of Purchase College, the Neuberger Museum of Art is uniquely positioned to function as a space in which new art and new interpretive strategies applied to its current collection are used to represent, critique, and weigh alternatives to important aspects of the dominant culture outside. The Museum recently inaugurated a new series in which exemplary younger artists from around the world are offered their first survey exhibitions and publications; and brilliantly refurbished some of its galleries to present its vastly expanded reinstallation of its African Art collection.

The Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York, engages and inspires diverse audiences by actively fostering the study, appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of modern art, African art, and the art of our time. The Museum is located at 735 Anderson Hill Road in Purchase, New York (Westchester).
