Whitechapel Gallery's Major Programme of Artists' Commissions, The Street, Presents Bernd Krauss

LONDON.- From 22 May, artist Bernd Krauss’ new commission brings a live bird’s eye view of London’s ever-changing skyline to street level for the Whitechapel’s new project The Street.

The Street is a major year-long programme of site specific artist’s commissions from the Whitechapel focusing on Wentworth Street (home to Petticoat Lane market) in East London.

Artist Bernd Krauss will use the top of residential tower block Denning Point on Wentworth Street, London E1, to create a live TV station overlooking Petticoat Lane Market and the ever-changing skyline of East London. These images will then be transmitted to a stack of second hand TV monitors on display at The Street’s headquarters - The Shop, 26 – 28 Toynbee Street, London E1 from 22 May – 13 July.

In addition, Krauss will organise a series of activities including ceramics classes, fitness programmes and photography exhibitions, which members of the public can participate in and which will take place in The Street’s headquarters - The Shop, 26 – 28 Toynbee Street, London E1.

Krauss is interested in marginalised communities and their infrastructures and aims to raise the profile of St Boniface Church, the German-speaking Catholic establishment on Adler Street.

Bernd Krauss, 22 May – 13 July 2008, is on display at The Street’s headquarters - The Shop, 26 – 28 Toynbee St, London, E1 from 30 March –18 May 2008, with the preview opening on 22 May, 6.30 - 9pm.

The Whitechapel is also working with artists Minerva Cuevas, General Public Agency, Jens Haaning, Henry VIII’s Wives, Lars Bang Larsen, Shimabuku and Canal to develop new commissions within and around Wentworth Street in East London. The commissioned artists will develop projects between March 2008 and April 2009 including public interventions, events, installations and performances and many will be sited in the project headquarters – a disused hat shop on adjacent Toynbee Street. The final artist’s commission for The Street will be on show at the Whitechapel Gallery as its major expansion opens in Spring 2009.

Bernd Krauss was born 1968 in Nuremberg and lives and works in Stockholm. He studied visual communication and cultural studies at the University of Hildesheim and has exhibited widely, including in exhibitions at Kunstverein Graz, K21, Dusseldorf, Lenbachhaus, Munich, Iaspis, Stockholm, Kunstverein Munich and Giti Nourbakhsch, Berlin. He teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute for Postgraduate studies and research, Willem De Kooning Academy, Hogeschool Rotterdam. He often lives near or inside the installations he is preparing, referencing and playing with the commissioning organisations.
