Argentine Bicentenary Non-Binding International Competition for Ideas and Images for 21st Century Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES.- Although the competition will not be binding, its ambition is to foster an interaction of proposals on the new "landmark of Argentina" for the 21st Century. In this way, the goal is to create a room for ideas aimed at reshaping the skyline of the City of Buenos Aires.

The competition will challenge competitors to conceive an architectural plan for the Rio de la Plata riverfront area that stretches from the Costanera Norte section to the La Boca neighborhood, passing through Puerto Madero, Retiro (railway and bus terminal and fiscal lands), the Plaza San Martin park, the Immigrants Hotel, and the Navy, Catalinas and Puerto Madero buildings.

The proposal targets architects, urban planners, landscapers, engineers, designers, artists and thinkers, who will be asked to imagine, in a multidisciplinary work, the urban landscape of the area and the actual materialization (whether symbolic or real) of a new icon which, as other milestones in a large metropolis, personifies a new sightseeing landmark for Argentina. In brief, a groundbreaking symbol of 21st Century Argentina.

The competition will not set a specific program for contestants; rather, it will give free room for architects and creators to bring up far-reaching urban proposals that result in a new image for a city that looks over the river, as the major cities in the world do.

The ten works short-listed by the jury, based on the competition's terms and conditions, will be made publicly known for evaluation and vote by the community, who shall choose the winner of a special prize. The prize will be handed over jointly with the work(s) selected by the jury as winners.

The competition's jury will include among its members the honorable participations of the President of the Republic of Argentina, Mrs. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the Chief of Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Mr. Mauricio Macri, Mr. Eduardo Elsztain, Chairman of IRSA, Architects Mario Roberto Alvarez and Rodolfo Machado, and representatives of the SCA as the organizing institution.
