Silvia Karman Cubiñá Appointed Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Bass Museum of Art



MIAMI.- After a lengthy national executive search process, the Board of Trustees of the Bass Museum of Art today appointed Silvia Karman Cubiñá as Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Bass Museum of Art, effective October 1, 2008.

Ms. Cubiñá is the Founding Director of The Moore Space (since 2002), an internationally - recognized contemporary art exhibition space in Miami, founded by collectors Rosa de la Cruz and Craig Robins. Prior to running The Moore Space Ms. Cubiñá served as an independent Curator since 1997, and held the position of Adjunct Curator at inova, the Institute of Visual Arts, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Previously, she held positions at The Mexican Museum in San Francisco and the Cuban Museum of Art in Miami.

At The Moore Space, she organized exhibition projects with artists such as: Allora & Calzadlla; Carlos Amorales; John Bock; Sean Dack; Jeppe Hein; Tracey + The Plastics; Jonathan Monk; Aida Ruilova; Hernan Bas; Jim Lambie; Patty Chang; Joan Jonas; Yang Fudong; and organized numerous group exhibitions as well. In 2007 Ms. Cubiñá presented the landmark exhibition French Kissing in the USA, a group of works by emerging French artists. Independently, Ms. Cubiñá has worked on exhibitions such as None of the Above: Contemporary Work by Puerto Rican Artists at Real Art Ways, Hartford, CT; Landmark/Allora & Calzadilla at the Escuela de Artes Plasticas in San Juan; Quisqueya Henríquez; Habitat en Tránsito/Piñones (In- Situ), Javier Cambre’s project for the 2002 Bienal Exhibition of the Whitney Museum of American Art; Pepón Osorio: Door to Door at Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan; Arte del Nuevo Medio: Doce Propuestas Electrónicas at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Puerto Rico; and she was the Puerto Rico commissioner to the 1997 Bienal de Sao Paolo.

She has lectured extensively internationally, and has participated in numerous grant panels and award selection committees. Most recently she served as a juror to the Guggenheim Museum’s prestigious Hugo Boss Award 2006. In 2007, she was a finalist for the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement, and was one of only ten fellows at the Center for Curatorial Leadership program in New York, a well-respected training program for museum curators.

George Lindemann, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and President of the Friends of the Bass Museum of Art, said "The Bass Museum, the City of Miami Beach and the greater South Florida arts community are so lucky that Silvia has accepted this job.
