ST. LOUIS, MO.- Laumeier Sculpture Park presents Artistically Incorrect: The Photographs and Sculpture of John Waters which opens October 11, 2008. Internationally-acclaimed director, filmmaker, entertainer and artist John Waters will bring his quirky insights to Laumeier for an exhibition that promises to be nothing short of spectacular.
John Waters is most often recognized for his films. He has written, directed, produced and acted in more than a dozen motion pictures. From his early underground cult classics to the latest iteration of, Hairspray, Waters films are full of twists and quirks. Those same characteristics permeate his life and career. Since the early 1990s Waters has been making photo-based artwork, sculpture and installations. This work is just as edgy, informed and full of dark humor as his films and has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the world.
Born in 1946, John Waters lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. He has had solo exhibitions across the country and around the globe at institutions including the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York), Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), The Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh, PA), The Orange County Museum of Art (Newport Beach, CA), the Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus, OH), Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Albert Merola Gallery (Provincetown, MA), Rena Branston Gallery (San Francisco), and PaceWildensteinMacGill (Los Angeles). His work has also been included in numerous national and international group exhibitions.
In 2008, Laumeier will present a solo exhibition of over 60 works by Waters in the indoor galleries. With a combination of photographs, montages, and sculptures, the show will challenge, confound and entertain. Additionally, Laumeier will present two of John Waters films in a special double-feature movie event. On Friday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m., the original Hairspray (1988: PG) will be shown followed by Polyester (1981: R) at 9:00 p.m. This special event at LOMA (Laumeier Outdoor Music Amphitheatre) is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring picnic baskets and blankets or lawn chairs for a fun evening of film in the park under the stars. No pets are allowed for special events.
Artistically Incorrect: The Photographs and Sculpture of John Waters opens October 11, 2008 at Laumeier Sculpture Park and continues through January 11, 2009. Museum hours are: Tuesday-Friday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM and Saturday-Sunday 12:00 PM-5:00 PM (Free).
