2008 Cinefemme Film Lineup
Mariam Jobrani's award-winning short doc "The Fighting Cholitas" (2006, 20 min.), about a group of bold and fierce female Bolivian wrestlers. Every Sunday, wearing traditional, vibrantly colored, multilayered skirts, these indigenous, Indian women leap into the ring to perform the acrobatic maneuvers of lucha libre wrestlers. Winner, Best Documentary at the NYC Shorts Film Festival 2006 and Honorable Mention at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007, "Fighting Cholitas" goes behind the scenes of this weekly main event in El Alto, Bolivia, to discover who these women are and what draws them to this unusual sport.
Robyn Dettman's "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" (2005, 18 min.), based on a short story by Joyce Carol Oates, the film follows a teenage girl's encounter with a mysterious stranger.
Michelle Kantor's "Antipodiste" (2008, 33:28 min.), a short doc exploring the charming world of Les Castors, three French foot-juggler brothers whose circus lineage stretches back five generations. Masters of the art of Risley, or body-juggling, these old-world European vaudeville clowns have mesmerized audiences from Queen Elizabeth to Charlie Chaplin, and now light up the big screen in this film's world premiere.
Michelle Kantor's "The Redemption" (1998, 10:41 min.), an experimental short narrative that takes a trip through several cinematic generations to reveal one man's reckoning with past sins.
