A Nomadic, Multidimensional Artist-Book Project at Museum Ludwig
Gerrit Göllner / Jon Shelton, Margin Milieu, Modell, 2008.

COLOGNE.- In the entrance-area of the Art and Museum Library and in the foyer of Museum Ludwig, the Austrian-American artist Gerrit Göllner (1973 Salzburg) and the American artist Jon Shelton (1965 Detroit), both of whom live in Cologne, are not only exhibiting artist-books, but will also be producing them in a semi-transparent, nomadic stu-dio/workshop and micro publishing unit, which they will construct themselves. The space will serve as a shared satellite studio for the two month duration of the project.

Here, between museum and library, both intend in collaboration to take this transit-transient situation as touchstone for collecting and dealing with impressions arising from it and from everyday mu-seum life and turning these into artist-books in situ: interaction, production and exhibition become a constant work in progress.

The installation Margin Milieu – “margin” alluding to the part of the page outside the printed matter as well as to the “marginal” area, the outside limit, of the library and the museum – enables the visitor to look on as the artists work, to communicate with them and see how they generate ideas and bounce them off each other. The encounter with the artists can become as much the focal point of in-terest as their ‘products’, the artist-books themselves.

This project, the first organized by The Friends of the Art and Mu-seum Library of the City of Cologne, was made possible by several private contributions.
