TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art
"Adventures of the Matrixial Cannibals" (detail), Enrique Chagoya.

LINCOLN, NB.- On view at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Sheldon Museum of Art Nov. 1 through Jan. 18, "TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art" presents works from 48 artists who, despite their differences, have commonly challenged assumptions about identity through their own hybrid cultures and life experiences.

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the exhibition celebrates the diverse nature of contemporary art and deconstructs obsolete preconceptions of what Latin American and Latino art is. The San Diego museum describes the artworks in "TRANSactions" as those that "tell stories of cultural hybrids, political collisions and universal consequences." Notable artists whose work is in the exhibition include Ana Mendieta, Vik Muniz, John Valadez, Perry Vasquez, Victor Payan and Gustavo Artigas. Media includes traditional art methods such as painting, photography, clay and glass as well as cutting-edge techniques involving installations, video, fabric, silk, beeswax and plastic.

Two artists whose works are included in the exhibition will present lectures in Sheldon's Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium: Enrique Chagoya on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 5:30 p.m. Liliana Porter on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 5:30 p.m.

Receptions will follow both lectures. The opening reception for the exhibition will be held during the Museum's First Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 7. All events are free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Sheldon will present its second annual Dia de los Muertos celebration Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

"TRANSactions" has been made possible by generous support from the Hixson-Lied Endowment, Kathryn and Marc LeBaron, and the Duncan Family Trust.

Sheldon Museum of Art houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects focusing on American art. The museum, 12th and R streets on the UNL City Campus, is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For information or to arrange a tour, call (402) 472-2461. Additional information is also available on the Sheldon Web site, www.sheldon.unl.edu.
