Sanford Smith's 23rd Annual Modernism: A Century of Style and Design

NEW YORK.- Modernism: A Century of Style and Design, the original and foremost fair devoted to the European and American design movements of the 20th century, has been a staple in New York’s fall season since 1986. Still at the forefront of design, the event bears the standard for an entire market. If imitation is indeed the sincerest form of flattery, Modernism: A Century of Style and Design has been complimented by subsequent appearances of similar fairs all over the world.

Over sixty international dealers will bring museum quality prototypes, fine art and rare pieces of furniture, glass, silver, textiles and more. Displays will encompass decorative arts movements such as Wiener Werkstätte; Arts and Crafts; Scandinavian; Art Deco; Post Modern; the 50’s 60’s and 70’s; and contemporary prototypes.

Many exhibitors in the fair will be returning experts who helped shape this genre and this important event into what they are today. Such dealers include: Aero (Finland), bringing fine examples of vintage Finnish design; Mark McDonald (Hudson, NY), with both decorative arts and American Modernist jewelry including an exciting collection of Art Smith pieces; John Alexander (Philadelphia), specializing in fine furniture and decorative arts in the British Arts and Crafts tradition; Tony Subal (Austria), with 20th century design, furniture and lighting; Staley-Wise Gallery (NYC), bringing a collection of fashion photography, Hollywood portraiture, landscape, still-life, and nudes; Carolle Thibaut-Pomerantz (NYC and Paris), specializing in decorative arts and 20th century wall papers; and Jacksons (Sweden), with a focus on the Scandinavian movement in decorative art and design. Returning after several years of absence from the fair are The Silver Fund (London) and Geoffrey Diner (Washington DC).

New exhibitors include: Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts (NYC), Caira Mandaglio (London), Lillian Nassau (NYC), Skalar Modern + Contemporary (Hudson, NY), Curiosités (NYC) and Weiss Antiques Gallery (Birmingham, MI).
