BOULDER, CO.- The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) announces the renovation and temporary closure of its historic building to meet accessibility standards. The City of Boulder owns the building that houses BMoCA and has budgeted funds to install an elevator, and reorient the gallery spaces making the building user friendly and compliant with regulations enforced by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

For thirty-six years, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA), a not-for- profit 501 C(3) organization, has provided arts and cultural programming in Boulder, Colorado. Originally called the Boulder Arts Center, the organization was founded in 1972 by a group of local artists to showcase and promote visual arts. In 1976, it relocated to its current location, in central downtown Boulder on Thirteenth Street, across from Central Park. In 1995, the organization was renamed Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and a series of renovations took place in the 1903 historical landmark building that once served as a granary.

Steadily over three decades the museum has built a reputation for contextualizing the evolution of contemporary art. By exhibiting work from both world class and debuting artists, the museum presents a broad range of visual styles, media and content. In creating a dialogue between the established and the experimental, the past and the present, our aim is to develop an environment that deepens the enjoyment of art’s vitality and visual impact. A nineteen member Board of Directors governs BMoCA with a group of trustees who serve in advisory roles. The staff is lead by two co-executive directors, one of whom serves as Senior Administrator and the other as Senior Curator. Administration actively seeks collaborations and partnerships with other organizations whose projects align with BMoCA’s mission and programs. Tracy Jennings, President of the Board of Directors remarks about the renovation project, “On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, we would like to thank the City of Boulder, the Boulder Arts Commission, and the Boulder Historic and Cultural Fund, for their contributions to the upcoming renovation of our building. This renovation will make our building compliant with the American with Disabilities Act and will allow us to provide more services to a broader audience.”

The museum will celebrate a grand reopening in early May. Due to construction timelines and the nature of remodeling a historic building an official date is not yet available for release. The museum staff will continue to offer outstanding public education programming for adults and youth in off-site locations. Several community partners have stepped forward to assist the museum in this time of transition.
