People's Art Forum: How Media's Coverage of Art Affects Public Perception

PORTLAND, OR.- The Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery presents a gallery talk by local art collector Duane Snider, watercolor artist Eileen Cotter Howell, and mixed media artist Shura Young examining media coverage and public perception of art. The discussion kicks off the Rental Sales Gallery’s 50th anniversary year and is a part of the People’s Art Forum series.

People’s Art Forum: How Media’s Coverage of Art Affects Public Perception
Thursday, February 19, 6 - 7:30 p.m.

Join the People's Art Forum for a discussion at the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery about how media coverage of art affects public perception. Guest speakers include art collector Duane Snider, watercolor artist Eileen Cotter Howell, and mixed media artist Shura Young.

The three-part discussion will begin with art collector Duane Snider addressing the impact media coverage has on public perception of art. Snider will consider whether media coverage captures the public's imagination or merely leaves a “blur.” He will consider how audience perception and media coverage unique to the Portland art scene compares to larger cities.

Offering an artist’s perspective, Eileen Cotter Howell and Shura Young will give a presentation about their artistic process and share examples of their work. Howell and Young, both artists represented by the Rental Sales Gallery, will discuss how their work fits into the local art scene and how people who collect their art find a connection with their work. The evening will include time for questions and answers after each speaker.

For 50 years the Portland Art Museum’s Rental Sales Gallery has promoted local art and represented local artists. The nonprofit gallery now represents more than 250 local artists from Oregon and the greater Portland-metropolitan area. The gallery maintains an inventory of nearly 2,000 works of art available for sale or rental.
