Philbrook to Expand in Tulsa's Arts District

TULSA, OK.- Utilizing approximately 5000 of the Museum’s allocated 20,000 sq. ft. of Mathews Warehouse space, Philbrook: MA&D (Modern Art & Design) is conceived as a dynamic platform for the presentation, exploration, and interpretation of modern and contemporary art, design, and artistic expression.

The space will facilitate the fusion of Philbrook’s growing commitment to modern art, the recently pledged George R. Kravis II Design Collection, and a consistent presentation of leading-edge programming.

As with the planned Adkins Center, Philbrook: MA&D is not intended to act or serve as a new museum. According to Larry Lee, Philbrook’s board chair, “Our aim is to add further dimension to Philbrook’s mission and hopefully the Brady District itself, by engaging new audiences and distinctively contributing to the cultural fabric of our community and region.”

Exhibitions will highlight important twentieth- and twenty-first-century work in conventional media (e.g., painting, sculpture, photography), new media (e.g., video, installation, assemblage), and modern and contemporary design. Programming will boldly engage a broad audience by focusing on quality and inclusivity, striving to present artists of diverse influences, ethnicities, and genders.

Through exhibitions and programs that challenge, inspire, educate, and entertain, the space will establish a new forum for modern and contemporary art and design in our community. Museum director Randall Suffolk stated: “The George Kaiser Family Foundation has blessed us with a unique, mission-specific opportunity to participate in the City’s redevelopment efforts. We’re grateful for this chance to lend further momentum to Tulsa’s evolution as a major urban center for art and culture.”

Suffolk continued: “To remain relevant, institutions must evolve as a community evolves. Tulsa is changing and Philbrook believes it has an important role to play in this transition. With a renewed commitment to outreach, education, and accessibility, we’re adapting to meet the needs of our audience. While the Adkins Center will certainly contribute to these efforts, Philbrook: MA&D is uniquely poised to spark a further and needed dialogue within the cultural life of our region.”
