Agencia Efe to Present Photo Exhibit in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO.-(EFE) Agencia Efe and the Cultural Center of Spain in Santo Domingo will present in the northern Dominican city of Santiago the photo exhibition "España Diversa" (The Diversity of Spain), which reflects the cultural, social and geographic richness and variety of the Iberian nation.

The collection to be exhibited in the Spanish Center of Santiago features 50 pictures taken by photographers of Efe, Spain's international news agency, who have captured a wide spectrum of Spanish diversity.

Enlivening the show are such geographical contrasts as Las Hurdes in Caceres province compared with villages in the south of Spain, and an assortment of traditions including the food-fight festival known as the "Tomatina" at Buñol in Valencia, the beating drums of San Sebastian's "Tamborrada" in the Basque region, and Catalonia's "Castellers," or human towers.

"España Diversa" attempts to "define Spanish identity through a selection of photos that combine the strength of tradition with the energy of modernity," according to the director of the Cultural Center of Spain in Santo Domingo, Fernando Rueda.

Other facets of Spain are also included in the exhibit like its architecture, from old traditional Galician granaries where harvests were stored to mosques like the one in Cordoba, Rueda said.

The exhibition, which will subsequently be taken to the Dominican capital, is the second photography exhibition that Efe and the Cultural Center of Spain have organized in the Caribbean country, where last year the show "From Gaudi to Calatrava" was held featuring Efe photos of architecture.
