Grammy Award Winning Team Restores Newly Discovered Andy Warhol Live Recordings
Andy Warhol recorded the opening night performance of the off-Broadway musical "Man on The Moon".

NEW YORK, NY.- Andy Warhol recorded the opening night performance of the off-Broadway musical "Man on The Moon" --whose music was composed by John Phillips of the Mamas & Papas -- from his front row seat in the Little Theatre on Broadway and 44th Street. It is the only audio recording available of the fully orchestrated and arranged musical. Using his mono portable cassette recorder, Andy gives us a window into a very strange night in January 1975.

The original cassette tapes were transferred at The Warhol Museum in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the digital files were then sent to The Magic Shop Recording Studio, in NYC. Grammy winning restoration engineers Steve Rosenthal and Warren Russell-Smith assessed the tapes and soon realized that although the tapes had problems, they were generally fixable, and that these recordings were truly invaluable to this project.

Steve and Warren began the restoration of Andy's tape by enlisting the help of Plangent Processes where engineer, Jamie Howarth, tried to remedy some of the speed, wow and flutter problems associated with the tapes. He was successful in curing many of these issues, although some songs could not be repaired.

After getting the tapes back at the studio, Steve and Warren set about reducing the noise, fixing the dropouts and repairing the frequency imbalances inherent in the recordings. This was accomplished through various digital and analog EQ's, compression and state of the art restoration techniques.

These tapes then joined a large batch of the score's songs performed by John Phillips himself on acoustic guitar and vocals as well as studio cast recordings making up Andy Warhol Presents Man On The Moon: The John Phillips Space Musical.

The result is a unique historical document of a long forgotten moment in the middle of the celebrity crazed, wildly creative, over-indulgent, 1970's.
