EDINBURGH.- Magazine, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s annual festival exhibition now in its 6th year, is Edinburgh’s foremost location to experience some of the most challenging and exciting art being produced in Scotland.

This year’s exhibition showcases an international debut of new work by David McAllister and Alex Hetherington. Hetherington’s evolving event will include work by Jim Colquhoun, Ben Schaffer, Ben Fallon, Lyndsay Mann, Lewis Holleran, Janie Nicoll, Simon Gowing, Pete Nelson, Karla Milosovich, Richard T Walker, Ulrike Müller and Victoria Skogsberg, and references material from the 1980 motion picture Cannibal Holocaust, directed by Ruggero Deodato.

The Artists
David McAllister produces work which forms a marriage between sculptural form and technology. He draws his aesthetic from computer animations and comic book pages, creating animated, interactive caricatures of recognisable forms. For this ambitious project he combines projection animation, sculpture and robotics.

Alex Hetherington and his collaborators will develop a body of work including performances and film screenings around pre-existing material. From the point of view of the multiple perspectives of artist, curator, audience member and participant, the work will build in layers, constantly changing during the exhibition. The concept of virtual spaces will be exploited by connecting the artists and activities in Scotland with equivalent artists and activities in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

MAGAZINE ‘09 launches a programme of events inspired by the planned development of ESW’s new international centre for contemporary sculpture.
This programme, entitled ‘Creative Space’ will run until the opening of the new building in 2010 and will examine notions of creative space as being formed by the relationships between individuals, objects and activities: an active participant rather than a passive container.
