"Wild Ocean 3D" to Debut at the National Museum of Natural History's Johnson Imax Theater Oct. 2

WASHINGTON, DC.- The Johnson Imax Theater presents the launch of its underwater film “Wild Ocean 3D” Oct. 2. This giant-screen film is the latest in the Smithsonian’s ocean-related Imax film series. The theater is adjacent to Sant Ocean Hall in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue N.W. in Washington, D.C.

The theater’s six-story-tall screen and 3D technology will immerse viewers in the on-screen action and take them on an unparalleled trip to the fishing villages and vibrant coastal waters of South Africa. Through the Imax’s giant screen and incredible sound system, the audience will experience the migration of marine life up South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Wild Coast and swim alongside dozens of aquatic species, including whales, sharks, penguins, sea lions and an incredible “bait ball” composed of millions of fish swimming in an underwater ballet. The rhythmic music of the film is matched to the struggle for life that unfolds on the screen.

“Wild Ocean 3D” reveals the effects of climate change and overfishing and how these changes have affected the migration’s fragile “circle of life.” The film also reveals the collaborative efforts of local governments, businesses and South African residents to protect and restore the migration.

Produced by the creators of Stomp and the Academy Award-nominated directors of “Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey,” “Wild Ocean 3D” combines a pulsating, rhythmic score with stunning Imax images and a timely story about ecological survival.

“Wild Ocean 3D” opens Oct. 2 and will show several times daily at the Johnson Imax Theater. Tickets will be available Friday, Sept. 18, and may be reserved up to two weeks in advance.
