EL PUERTO, CADIZ, SPAIN.- Her Royal Highness Infant Doña Cristina opens today the expansion of the Fundación Rafael Alberti building. This house at the Santo Domingo Street was the home of the artist. This year we celebrate the centennial of the birth of this artist. There will be editions of his complete works, concerts, exhibitions and conferences on the artist’s centennial.
Pablo Picasso once said that Alberti was a better painter than poet. Alberti, of course, said the same of Picasso, that Picasso was a better poet than painter. Alberti was born a hundred years ago this day. He was the last of the ’27 generation to die (died on October 28, 1999).
Alberti was the fifth son of six children that Agustín Alberti and María Merello had. They came originally from Italy. Rafael alberti’s daughter remembers that the “best award he got was” when he was given a diploma, a bucket of grapes and a thousand liters of Frascatti wine.
