STOCKHOLM.- Tris Vonna-Michell, was born in 1982 in Rochford and raised in Southend-on-Sea in England, and lives and works in London and Berlin. His extraordinary performances and installations have received considerable critical acclaim and he was recently selected by two of Art Forum’s critics Suzan Cotter and Matthew Higgs as one of the top ten highlights in art in 2008. Vonna-Michell is known for telling stories, he weaves together personal reminiscences with almost other worldly tales presenting them with props and stages that construct new worlds of narrative. He has exhibited at Tate Modern, the Witte de With in Rotterdam, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, and at The Berlin Biennial 2008.

The solo exhibition by Tris Vonna-Michell is a combination of older and new works. We see pieces that he has developed since 2001 in Germany, New York, Berlin, London, Stockholm and elsewhere. What is particular about his working method is that for every new exhibition Vonna-Michell remakes the works. He selects new sequences of slides, adds new audio tracks, and for this exhibition has even translated parts into Swedish.

Disparate themes are brought together that link the Stasi bunkers in Berlin with personal reminiscences or Japanese poems with a rapid-fire delivery of self-doubt. We hear Tris performing live as well as in studio recordings. The images are drawn from his continuous travelling and we see glimpses of his very particular way of seeing. Vonna-Michell is very particular in everything he does. The selection of the projectors, the Telex machines, the monitors, the furniture, are all carefully chosen or constructed. In his extreme attention to detail the multi-layering of the stories and images of the work are an exact cipher into his personal and often private view of the world.
