BERKELEY, CA.- The Subterranean Arthouse is very excited to present the new work of local artists in the proposed theme gain through loss. “Catacombs & Crossroads” will be an interactive arts event for artists and community members to express and honor loss, as well as find the benefits it can bring. Whether it is the loss of a precious object, person, part of ones self, childhood, dream or anything, artists will be developing installations that address this human experience and find ways that it has helped them.
With elements of Halloween and Day of the Dead, “Catacombs & Crossroads” on Sunday, November 1st, will be in the spirit of darkness, mystery, the sacred and the absurd. Without a religious content, this art show is taking the concept of death or “loss” and finding how we can all relate and how we can all celebrate it. It is a play on the thin veil between our world and the after life bridging this through installation art, dance, film and music.
The doors will open at 5pm. The evening presentation, starting at 7pm, will be a live music show with dance and performance art pieces. One section of the evening will be a piece by local Japanese Butoh dance master Hiroko Tamano in collaboration with Txi Whizz a Butoh buffoonist and clowning instructor. Butoh dance is a Japanese contemporary dance form that also asks the audience to sense, and contemplate life, death, the beautiful and the ugly.
The collaborative nature of this event will be avant-garde, contemporary, conceptual and very unique for the Berkeley community to enjoy. People are encouraged to come dressed as an ancestor or bring an offering to the deceased or something “lost”. Photos of people that have passed to put, temporarily, on an altar are also welcome. Be prepared to experience eccentric, rich, and beautiful art, dance, spoken word, film and music.
The Subterranean Arthouse is a new interdisciplinary community art space in Downtown Berkeley that offers diverse opportunities for local, national, and international artists to teach, create and present their art form. Through weekly classes, performances, film showings and visual art exhibitions, we encourage dialogue between disciplines, between artists. Co-founded and directed by Nicole Rodriguez and Claire Duplantier in March of 2009, The Subterranean Arthouse is a inspiring venture. They attended Performance Art and Performance Studies Programs at Naropa University and NYU until they found this aesthetically beautiful space to support the arts in having a place to be presented. They are a new addition to the Berkeley art community and are inspired to share their unique programs.
