LONDON.- Meredith Gunderson, one of the leading independent contemporary art specialists, will present an exhibition of paintings by young Scottish talent, Briony Anderson at a pop-up exhibition in Piccadilly Arcade, London from 10 June to 4 July (private view 9 June).

Gunderson, known for identifying promising talent with the potential for global recognition and career endurance, has followed Anderson’s development for a number of years and has tipped her for international success. The exhibition is Anderson’s first solo London show and will consist of a new body of work comprising over 20 delicate small and large oil paintings on paper, as well as works on canvas and board, which are part of an ongoing investigation into the way in which landscape represents a way of seeing – the art being less about the act of observation, but the act of looking.

At the age of 28, Anderson has already made considerable traction in her career. The exhibition demonstrates the artist’s maturity as a serious painter making works of both intellect and arresting beauty. Underpinning her paintings, like all great works, is an open-ended tension. In Anderson’s case, this tension explores the cultural significance of a landscape and the roles and implication the viewer brings to the work.

Born in Aberdeen, Anderson attended the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art where she gained an MA (Hons) in Fine Art. In 2010 she was awarded a five year residency by Acme Studios to pursue her fine art practice as part of its Fire Station residency programme in London, which supports exceptional talent. She has also been won recognition and awards from the Scottish Arts Council and Royal Glasgow Institute.

Anderson’s work has been presented annually in solo exhibitions since her graduation and as part of numerous group exhibitions including The Royal Scottish Academy, AirSpace Gallery, Staffordshire and Aberdeen Art Gallery. Most recently her work ‘Studies for Raeburn’ was seen at The Royal Society of Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival where she responded to the portraits of Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823).

Commenting on Briony Anderson’s work, Meredith Gunderson says, “I met Briony when I first moved to Scotland and was immediately impressed by her unique voice as an artist, the intellectual depth of her work and her prowess as a painter. It has been a delight to watch her career developing in recent years and I am proud to present her first solo London exhibition as her London representation. I often hear the question of who to look out for and who is the next best thing, I can hand on heart say Briony fits the bill. She is one of a small number of young British artists with the raw skill, work ethic and emotional profundity to make a real name for herself and produce highly collectable works of art.”

Briony Anderson’s solo exhibition will be open to the public to view from 10 June to 4 July, Monday to Saturday between 10:00 and 18:00 or by appointment at Piccadilly Arcade no. 4, London SW1Y 6NH. All works are for sale with prices ranging from £1,000 to £10,000.
