GRAND RAPIDS, MI.- The largest cash prize in an art competition, $250,000, was presented tonight to Chris LaPorte from Grand Rapids, Mich. for his work Cavalry, American Officers, 1921 during the
ArtPrize winners announcement held in Grand Rapids, Mich.
ArtPrize, which has no formal jury, curator or judge, asks the public to vote and decide the winners using the web and mobile devices. ArtPrize 2010 began Sept. 22 with 1,713 artists displaying their works at 192 venues in a three-square-mile district in Grand Rapids , Mich. In this second year of ArtPrize, artists from 21 countries and 44 states competed for prize monies totaling $449,000.
Hundreds of thousands of people have made their way to Grand Rapids to view art. One of the 192 venues reported more than 120,000 visitors went through its exhibits. ArtPrize 2010 had 44,899 members of the public registered to vote. Registered voters came from 36 states and more than a dozen foreign countries. During the 15 days of competition, 465,538 votes were cast, including 16,905 votes in the final round.
The second-place award of $100,000 went to Mia Tavonatti from Santa Ana , Calif. for Svelata and the third-place award of $50,000 went to Beili Liu from Austin , Texas for Lure/Wave, Grand Rapids . The remaining entries in the top 10, in order, received $7,000 each, including:

6th Place - Wander Martich, Helping mom one penny at a time, Grand Rapids , Mich.

9th Place - Steam Pig Experiment Birks, Jensen, SteamPig, Grand Rapids , Mich.
10th Place - Fredrick Prescott, Elephant Walk, Santa Fe , N.M.
Cavalry, American Officers, 1921 will become part of the ArtPrize Collection. ArtPrize will make Cavalry, American Officers, 1921 available for loan to reputable institutions upon request.
In addition to the public vote for the top 10 winners in ArtPrize 2010, this year ArtPrize awarded five sponsored, juried awards plus a sustainability award. Each of these award winners received $5,000. Listed are the award, the sponsor, the name of the work and the winner.
