Baseball Legend, Yogi Berra, Adds Space to His Museum and Learning Center
The museum needed additional space to exhibit baseball memorabilia.

PRINCETON, NJ.- It’s October and time for the World Series again. One of baseball’s legends, Yogi Berra, has added space to his museum and learning center in Montclair, NJ where he uses the life lessons he learned from baseball and the New York Yankees to promote good sportsmanship, respect, integrity, social justice, and the pursuit of excellence. ikon.5 architects in Princeton, NJ, designed an addition that transformed the museum from its original opaque and solid appearance to a transparent glass box that acts as a “billboard” advertising the activities inside.

The museum needed additional space to exhibit baseball memorabilia, room for collaborative teaching, and a reception hall to host a variety of functions, all done within a modest budget. The one‐room gallery is a vitrine for displaying baseball memorabilia and the mission of the museum and learning center. The transparent gallery allows the exhibits, temporary or permanent, to be on display for those driving by on the access road.

Joe Tattoni, AIA, principal of ikon.5 architects, said “This small intervention to the existing building has completely transformed how the museum and learning center interacts with its visitors.”

The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center came to a fork in the road and they took it….to a much more hospitable building that will invite visitors in to see a wealth of memorabilia and a look into the life of a remarkable baseball player and a remarkable man.

ikon.5 architects is an award‐winning architecture firm in Princeton, NJ known for its design of higher education buildings, cultural institutions, and commercial spaces. The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center was awarded “Best Small Project” by New York Construction this past fall and a Merit Award by the New Jersey American Institute of Architects.
