NEW YORK, NY.- On April 26, YouTube Play. A Biennial of Creative Video was recognized at the second annual Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards. One of the major non-film events at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, the Disruptive Innovation Awards celebrate progress from unexpected and untraditional places. Deputy Director and Chief Curator Nancy Spector received the award and attended on behalf of the project. Other honorees, who came from a variety of institutions and organizations, included Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, recipient of this year’s lifetime achievement award; Keith Richards, recognized for his “Open G Tuning” method of guitar playing; and U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, adjunct fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and director of Google Ideas.

Spector was featured on a panel discussion moderated by Tribeca Film Festival's Chief Creative Officer Geoffrey Gilmore. The discussion highlighted innovative intersections of film, media, and the arts, including YouTube Play. The panel also included Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, who addressed their move to global HD simulcasts; and James Ramsey, who spoke about the combination of classic cinema and video gaming technology in Rockstar Games’s L.A. Noire.

In October 2010, Guggenheim and YouTube, in collaboration with HP and Intel, presented YouTube Play. A Biennial of Creative Video. From more than 23,000 YouTube video submissions from 91 countries across the globe, the Guggenheim’s curators selected shortlist of 125 videos, from which a distinguished jury picked the top 25 works. The top videos and artists were celebrated at an event at the Guggenheim Museum in New York on October 21, 2010. Videos were projected on the exterior of Frank Lloyd Wright’s landmark building on Fifth Avenue as well as inside the museum’s rotunda. From October 22 to 24, 2010 the works were shown at Guggenheim museums in New York, Berlin, Bilbao, and Venice. The online component of the project is its YouTube channel, where you can still view the shortlist and top 25 videos, as well as highlights from the event in New York.

The Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards were held at the Citigroup Auditorium, and were presented by the Tribeca Film Festival in association with Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen and the Disruptor Foundation.
