LONDON.- On 21st June nearly 100 paintings from a remarkable single owner collection will be on offer at Bonhams Knightsbridge saleroom. With a whole range of subjects, works by 18th, 19th and 20th century artists and estimates ranging from £300-40,000 there really is something to tempt every collector.

Highlights include a beautiful marine oil painting by Henry Scott of the American clipper “Glory of the Seas”, which is estimated to fetch £20,000-30,000. 'Glory of the Seas' was the last in a long line of medium clippers designed and built by the great Donald McKay at his East Boston yard. Launched in October 1869, she was registered at 2,009 tons and measured 240 feet in length with a 44 foot beam before making her maiden voyage from New York to San Francisco. The figurehead of the ship is preserved at the India House, New York. The work was previously hung in Fortnum and Mason.

A portrait of Frederic, Lord Leighton by John Hanson Walker (estimate £10,000-15,000) is also expected to generate a lot of interest. After its exhibition at the R.A. in 1877, the Art Journal commented, 'The portrait which we most affect in Gallery IV is that of F.Leighton Esq., R.A. in a brown velvet jacket. We are glad to see that the artist, J.Hanson Walker, has really risen to the height of the subject".

A scene of Figures in ruins by a follower of Giovanni Paolo Panini (£8,000-12,000) evokes the classical architectural landscapes of Italy, a charming landscape of Port Bannatyne, Isle of Bute by William Davis (£4,000-6,000) and a portrait of Lady Jane Dance by Sir James Jebusa Shannon (£3,000-5,000) are just a few of the other works on offer.

Veronique Scorer, Head of Bonhams Knightsbridge Pictures Department, comments, “We are really excited to be selling this wonderful and varied collection which includes Old Master Paintings, Portraits, Marine Paintings, Victorian and 20th Century British and Irish Art. The auction offers a fantastic opportunity to acquire an interesting and decorative painting from a range of periods.”
