Art Gallery Founder Richard T. York, 52, Dies



NEW YORK.- American art dealer Richard T. York,52, died of cancer. Richard T. York was the president and founder of the Richard York Gallery. He was widely recognized as a leading authority on American art from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, and wrote and lectured frequently on works from this period. Mr. York was a member of the Art Dealers Association of America (serving for three years as Vice President), a William Cullen Bryant Fellow with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and participated in numerous other art and community service organizations. He recently served for seven years on the Art Advisory Panel of the Internal Revenue Service. He also is included in "Who’s Who in American Art." Mr. York brought a wealth of experience in various schools of American and European art. Prior to founding the gallery, Mr. York was an associate with the Hirschl and Adler Galleries in New York, specializing in American art from 1755 to 1940 and nineteenth to early twentieth century European art. He also headed the American Department of M. Knoedler & Co in New York focusing on the same schools and periods in addition to contemporary American artists. Earlier, Mr. York was the Director of American art with the Hammer Galleries in New York, also specializing in eighteenth to twentieth century American works. Prior to that, he was the director of the Period Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee working with American western art.
He is frequently quoted in art publications and general business media and was recently cited in "Business Week," "Town and Country," "Art & Auction," "The Wall Street Transcript" and "The New York Times." He has also lectured recently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York University and the New Jersey State Museum.
Mr. York held a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University. He also did coursework at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
