NEW YORK.- Photojournalist James Karales, 71, died. In 1965 he took a picture of determined marchers outlined against a lowering sky that became a pictorial anthem of the civil rights movement. According to his wife, he died of cancer. Karales was born July 15, 1930 in Canton. Ohio. He studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Ohio University. He worked at Magnum photo agency and worked as the darkroom assistant of photographer W. Eugene Smith. In 1958 he had his first solo exhibition with Helen Gee's Limelight gallery. According to Howard Greenberg, Karales was modest and unaggressive to a fault.
