Antoniadis & Stone, Deadline (detail), 2011. Poly-vinyl chorlide (PVC), spray paint, plastic, raw pigment, approximately 10 feet x 3 feet x 4 inches.

BOSTON, MA.- Samsøn presents Antoniadis and Stone’s 1st solo exhibition, ROUGH SHAPE, on view December 16th to January 28th 2012. “ROUGH SHAPE refers to the current state of affairs as we see it: a struggling economy, a growing sense of alienation in one’s own world and the spiritual poverty that is inherent in our culture’s institutional systems.”

Using urethane foam, latex paint, plastic and poly-vinyl chloride, three sculptures create a spiritual awakening from realist boundaries and realms of corporate failure. Social Climber reflects a certain current human condition; a relic of empty anxiety that pulls elements from a Post-Minimalist sensibility. Support System provides evidence of the materials as signifiers camouflaged and subverted by the industrial process.

All the works question materiality and architectural strictures placed on us by the institution. There are no found objects. Creating it all changes the meaning and destroys a past. Illusion and craft combine to create visual anomalies found from vandalism on a window to Brutalist architecture and modernist tropes.

Alexi Antoniadis and Nico Stone create the collaborative enterprise Antoniadis & Stone. Formed in 2006, they live and work in Boston, MA. Nico Stone (b. 1978, Boston, MA) is a self-taught artist. Alexi Antoniadis (b. 1974, Palo Alto, CA) received his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. They have had solo exhibitions at the Sherman Gallery at Boston University and the Harbor Gallery at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. They have participated in group exhibitions at the Lamontagne Gallery, the Montserrat College of Art Gallery, the Fourth Wall Project and the Bumpkin Island Art Encampment in Boston Harbor. They’re work is concurrently on view in this year’s deCordova Biennial at the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, MA.
