Russian Master Nicholai Dubovik, Professor at the Serikov Institute in Moscow will do a plein air demonstration at the PleinAir convention.

AUSTIN, TX.- The 1st Annual Plein Air Convention, the United States’ most significant gathering of American and international outdoor painters, will make its debut in Las Vegas at Red Rock Resort, Casino & Spa, April 12-15, 2012. The conference will be historic as the largest ever gathering of plein air artists.

Produced by PleinAir magazine, a publication that caters to artists who paint outdoors on location, the event is attracting artists from countries all over the world, including Russia, New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Participants are expected to break the world record for the greatest number of artists painting on location at a single venue, when an anticipated 750 painters will set up their easels in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Keynoting the event is Richard Ormond of London, grand-nephew of famed painter John Singer Sargent, author of many Sargent books, and the world’s foremost expert on Sargent’s work. Also keynoting is highly acclaimed Russian master artist Nicholai Dubovik, professor at the Surikov Institute in Moscow. Because of the Russian influence on art throughout the world, the convention will feature “Russian Day,” a special series of lectures and demonstrations showcasing several Russian masters and art dealer John Wurdeman, who is highly involved in the Russian plein air movement.

The Plein Air Convention will feature hundreds of world-class painters and will include painting demonstrations, art lectures, painting critiques, and outdoor painting. The 2012 event will also feature a unique opportunity for painters to learn from plein air’s finest luminaries and create their own work alongside them. Instructors include master painters Clyde Aspevig, Scott Christensen, and more than 30 others.

Highlights of the faculty include Carol Guzman-Aspevig, Ken Auster, Kenn Backhaus, Elaine & Peter Adams of the California Art Club, Ed Brickler, Michael Godfrey, Gil Dellinger, Michael Chesley Johnson, Scott Gellatly, Erik Koeppel, Ulrich Gleiter, Jeff Legg, Kim Lordier, Jean LeGassick, Jeremy Lipking, Morgan Samuel Price, Ned Mueller, Scott Prior, Camille Przewodek, Tony Pro, Richard Robinson, Lori Putnam, Alexey Steele, Ray Roberts, Ed Terpening, Bryan Mark Taylor, Jean Stern of the Irvine Museum, Matt Smith, David Tanner, and Dawn Whitelaw.

“Since I first started PleinAir, I have dreamed of getting all the great painters of the world together in one place,” says B. Eric Rhoads, publisher and founder of PleinAir magazine. “To watch great living masters paint, and gather around them to trade stories and learn from their experiences — that has never been done before on this scale. We think it will go down as a historic and monumental event, and will be the largest gathering of plein air painters in one place in history. We already know of painters coming from every state, and from as far away as Europe and New Zealand. The convention will be a must-attend event for professional painters, serious amateurs, art students and teachers, and people who love art and painting.”
