MADRID.- This past week, FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE presented the exhibition Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), which will be on display in the Salas Recoletos (Paseo de Recoletos 23, Madrid) until 2 September.

Comprising 153 works including oil paintings, works on paper and sculptures, this exhibition will only be shown in Madrid. In addition, there is a complementary selection of 35 modern prints of the photographs through which Kirchner documented his life and creative activities.

The exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of all the phases in the artist’s career and the media in which he worked. As such it presents a radical rethinking of traditional art historical interpretations of his figure.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) was one of the leading figures of German Expressionism, a co-founder of the celebrated group Brücke [Bridge] in 1905 and one of the great artists of the modern age.

Entirely devised and produced by FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE, this exhibition has counted on the special collaboration of the Kirchner Museum Davos, in addition to that of a further 26 museums and private collections of international renown (including the MNAM Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the National Gallery, Washington, the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Estate, the Henze & Ketterer Gallery, Wichtrach-Berne, the National Gallery, Berlin, the Folkwang Museum, Essen, the Staatliche Staatsgemäldessammlungen, Dresden, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, and the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, Ludwigshafen).

Attending the press conference was Alberto Manzano Martos, President of FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE, Pablo Jiménez Burillo, Director General of the Institute of Culture of FUNDACIÓN MAPFRE, and the exhibition’s curator, Karin Schick.
