BAARN.- Soestdijk Palace is hosting a unique Escher exhibition: M.C. Escher, Walks through Time.

This exhibition houses 80 works made by Escher at the peak of his life. Escher lived in Italy for 13 years and in Baarn for over 30 years. 'Walks through Time' reflects Escher’s most productive period in Baarn, where he walked through the woods at least 2 hours a day. The exhibition displayed in several rooms of the palace includes many of the highlights of M.C. Escher’s work put in a very personal context.

Escher as travelling companion
A personal collection of his private photographs enables visitors to connect with the places that were a source of inspiration for M.C. Escher. In addition, the exhibition displays many personal artefacts, sketchbooks and letters, offering visitors a personal insight into his life. Visitors ‘walk through time’with Escher as their travelling companion by reading his personal quotes. These provide them with background stories and themes that are the foundation of his spectacular works.

M.C. Escher is one of the world’s most famous graphic artists. His art is admired by millions of people all over the world, as proven by the many websites dedicated to Escher. The Dutch artist is known for his woodcuts, wood engravings and lithographs, in which he often played with mathematical principles. His engravings often represent impossible structures, studies of infinity and tessellating geometrical patterns (divisions of the plane) that gradually change into something totally different. Most people are familiar with his so-called impossible drawings, such as Ascending and Descending and Relativity, but his metamorphoses, such as Metamorphosis I, II and III, Sky and Water and Reptiles are also well-known.

Since 1960 Escher’s graphicworks have appeared in scientific books and study material. In the 1960s, his work was – much to Escher’s surprise –embraced by hippies and pop stars, mainly due to the fantastic parallel worlds. An exhibition on the magical world of Escher in Rio de Janeiro was the most visited exhibition of 2011 and attracted over 573,000 visitors.

Soestdijk Palace
Soestdijk Palace with its collection, gardens, history and story, is a great venue for a totally different event. All 30 performances of the Orfeo opera that were held at the Palace were sold out. The combination of the palace and the event was one of the reasons for the success.

During the Escher exhibition visitors are able to explore Soestdijk Palace and walk through the gardens. A walkthrough the gardens of Soestdijk Palace is also a walk through time.

The M.C. Escher exhibition is on display from 16 August up to and including 28 October 2012. During the exhibition there will be special package deals, workshops and activities.
