NEW YORK, NY.- Judd Foundation, created in 1996 to preserve Donald Judd’s permanently installed living and working spaces and to promote a wider understanding of and appreciation for Judd’s artistic legacy, announces the appointment of Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd, the daughter and son of the artist, as Co-Presidents of the Foundation, effective in January 2013.

Board Member Rob Beyer comments, “As Judd Foundation enters a new period with the re-opening of Judd’s home and studio in SoHo in June 2013, in addition to numerous other projects in the works, we could not be more excited to have Rainer and Flavin taking on a more active leadership role as Co-Presidents.”

In a joint statement, Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd add, “It’s been more than 15 years since Judd Foundation was created. In that time, the organization has grown from a nascent artist foundation to one that today maintains 16 properties in New York and Marfa, Texas, including providing regular visitor access at its Marfa location; has an operating endowment; and employs more than 15 full-time staff. We are committed to continue Judd Foundation’s important work in our new roles as Co-Presidents.”

With the restoration of Donald Judd’s home and studio at 101 Spring Street in New York in its final phase of the three-year project, Executive Director, Barbara Hunt McLanahan, will step down at the end of 2012. “Over the past seven years, Barbara has contributed immensely to the development and profile of Judd Foundation through her public programming and outreach,” Rainer Judd says. She has been a leader in encouraging new scholarship, new audiences, and best practices in promoting Judd's legacy, and we are so grateful for all that she has accomplished.”

“During Barbara’s tenure,” adds Flavin Judd, “We saw Judd Foundation establish improved processes for the care and maintenance of its collection, launch the innovative Donald Judd online library, and commence with the Donald Judd Catalogue Raisonné. Judd Foundation’s staff also nearly tripled in size. We wish Barbara great success in the future.”

Barbara McLanahan states, “Judd Foundation has given me the fantastic opportunity to help further the exploration and knowledge of Judd’s work and to make it more accessible to the public. I am proud of all that has been accomplished during my time as Executive Director, especially with the 101 Spring Street restoration, and I am full of anticipation for the opening in June.”

In their new roles as Co-Presidents, Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd will share the executive leadership of the Foundation. Rainer Judd will continue to oversee Judd Foundation’s oral history project, which documents interviews with individuals who have unique and invaluable perspectives into Donald Judd’s philosophy and working methods. Beyond Judd Foundation, she is a filmmaker, actor, and artist. A graduate of New York University, Tisch School of Art, her films have received awards and have been screened at film festivals internationally.

Flavin Judd will continue to oversee art installations and deal with curatorial matters and architectural issues having to do with the Foundation’s buildings in Marfa, Texas, and New York. He also supervises all design efforts on behalf of the Foundation. For Donald Judd, he assisted in the making of spaces and the installation of art in the US and Europe. His installation and architecture for the 2006 exhibition at Christie’s New York of his father’s work earned an AICA award for “best show in an alternative space.” Outside of Judd Foundation, Flavin Judd writes books and designs spaces. He is the husband of psychoanalyst Michèle Judd and the father of three children.
