NORWICH.- The Gallery at NUCA reveals a unique and dazzling display of 1,000 sketch-based works by the internationally renowned pop artist, Colin Self.

Self’s irreverent and obsessive production and collection of works include rapid sketches, mementoes, assemblage and collage which evoke feelings of restlessness and immersion within the mind of the viewer.

Neil Powell, Assistant Principal (Student Experience), Norwich University College of the Arts, who has brought this exciting show to the Gallery at NUCA says:

‘After visiting the artist in his studio, one retains the indelible impression of a truly gifted artist and creative thinker; Self has that rare gift of insight which enables him to create exquisite images and objects from discarded remnants, recycled packaging and trivial artefacts. His unique capacity for adding value to things which have lost their meaning is extraordinary and unusual’

Self is an important and widely exhibited figure in British art who attended Norwich School of Art before attending the Slade School of Fine Art in the 1960s. His earlier Pop Art eloquently characterised the paranoia and fear of nuclear weapons, nuclear power and the Cold War.

Based in Norfolk, Self paints landscapes as well as addressing a wide range of themes and ideas in various media. His practice delivers a unique, compelling and sometimes idiosyncratic vision of the world.

Norwich University College of the Arts is an independent higher education institution within the University sector that carries a 165-year history.
