SAN ANTONIO, TX.- The San Antonio Museum of Art announces the publication of The San Antonio Museum of Art: Guide to the Collection, the first overview of the museum’s wide-ranging collections.

With more than 170 works of art and fully illustrated in color, this 220-page volume includes a brief history of the museum, which is housed in the historic buildings of the former Lone Star Brewery. Each page features a single work of art with explications by the museum’s curators and other art scholars. A painting by 19th century American artist, Martin Johnson Heade, “Passion Flowers with Three Hummingbirds,” graces the cover with its jewel-like colors and luminous landscape background.

“Our museum is sometimes acclaimed for its Latin American art, but the new Guide demonstrates our scope as an encyclopedic museum, “ said Katherine C. Luber, The Kelso Director. “Given the museum’s age—just thirty years—our collection is quite remarkable with more than 25,000 objects from around the globe, spanning 5,000 years. This guide charts an inspiring journey through our young but ambitious and growing museum.”

The San Antonio Museum of Art is housed in the historic Lone Star Brewery along the Museum Reach section of the San Antonio River Walk near downtown. SAMA’s collection contains more than 25,000 works of art representing cultures from around the world and over 5,000 years of history.
