SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Bonhams announced it achieved a result of $1,042,511 from its first Fine and Rare Wines auction of 2013, held March 9 in San Francisco, and simulcast in New York and Los Angeles. Comprising the star lot of the auction was a dozen bottles of 1982 Château Lafite Rothschild sold for $35,700, ahead of an estimate of $25,000-35,000.
Various Claret examples achieved strong results in the auction, including 12 bottles of 1961 Château Lafite Rothschild, which brought $15,470; six bottles of 1986 Château Lafite Rothschild which brought $8,330; and 12 bottles of 1986 Château Lafite Rothschild which sold for $11,900, a part of the continuation of offerings of property from a Southern California collector, started in December of 2012.
Bordeaux highlights continued with 12 bottles of 2000 Chateau Mouton Rothschild that achieved $13,090; 12 bottles of 1982 Château Mouton Rothschild, which brought $12,495, ahead of an estimate of $9,000-12,000; and 12 bottles of 1982 Château La Mission Haut-Brion, which sold for $10,710.
California wines also had a very strong showing, with record prices being attained for many lots. Among the standouts were 12 bottles of 1975 Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon, which sold for a record price of $4,165, and a mixed case of 1978 and 1980 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon which sold for $6,545. Also of note was the collection of Sine Qua Non wines featured on the catalogue cover, many of which sold well above their estimate ranges.
Fine Cognac also did well on Saturday, with a full eight-bottle set of Courvoisier in decanters designed by notable Art Deco artist Erté bringing $7,735.
Red Burgundies highlighted in the sale included a seven-bottle lot comprised of mixed vintages of Armand Rousseau Chambertin which sold for $7,735. Another impressive result was a lot including 11 bottles of mixed vintages of E. Rouget Vosne-Romanée, Cros Parantoux, which sold for $7.735.
The next Fine and Rare Wines auction at Bonhams will take place May 18 in San Francisco, simulcast in New York and Los Angeles.
